Yury Tynyanov (1894-1943) was a literary and film critic as well as a historical novelist. A translation of his novel on the dramatist-diplomat Alexander Griboyedov, 'Death and Diplomacy in Persia', appeared in 1938; his story 'Lieutenant Kizhe' is the subject of a symphonic suite by Prokofiev.
