Whatever one thinks of North's self-serving efforts to associate his own name with military heroism, this book about the Pacific theater of World War II is very good. Adapted from a cable TV show that North hosts, it is a well-organized narrative history that combines clear descriptions of unfolding events with compelling first-person accounts by individual soldiers, sailors, and pilots. What makes the work especially interesting is its presentation of Japanese voices. Although clearly designed to boost American patriotism, the book is by no means excessively pro-American. Joel Leffert narrates with such breathless energy that he would do a good job waking up students whom high school teachers are struggling to interest in World War II.
