No Welshman is likely to include 1066 in the title of a history
book since that year has little significance for him, beyond
denoting yet another attempt by a foreign enemy to stamp his
authority on Wales. His country survived the first onslaught and
was still resisting Norman power over two hundred years later.
Some historians, however, tend to think that history really started
in 1066, and that everything that happened before that date belongs
to the 'dark ages'. Again, this is not so in the story of
Wales.
This book looks at the past through the eyes of the Welsh people,
celebrating their long and unbroken links with the earliest
inhabitants of their mountainous and beautiful country. It is a
history of an independent and resilient race and in this book the
story of Wales before 1066 has been divided into four chronological
parts.
It is also a guide - after each history chapter, the reader is
guided to what may still be seen to illustrate the historical
surveys.
