Reviews

"...the most comprehensive reference text of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)... a valuable reference source for those working in hyperbaric medicine" P. Moore, Sacramento, CA, in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Vol. 34, No. 6, December 2006 "...by far the most comprehensive textbook available on the topic of hyperbaric medicine and its clinical applications... Dr. Jain and colleagues have done an exceptional job in providing a current understanding of the principles regarding HBO and its clinical applications in today's medical setting... I would recommend this textbook for anyone studying HBO and for those who wish to know more about its practical applications." John W. Calvert, M.D., John H. Zhang, M.D., Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Loma Linda, CA, in Journal of Neurosurgery, Volume 102, May, 2005 "This textbook should be available, as a reference, in any institution dealing with patients presenting with conditions amenable to hyperbaric medicine treatment approaches. It is also a 'must read' in the armamentarium of providers of hyperbaric medicine." Col. Thomas N. Little, USAR, MC, FS, (Ret) in Military Medicine, December 2004 "...a clear introduction to the practice of Hyperbaric medicine as well as discussing the various indications for the use of this therapeutic modality... the book's clear and concise...format provides a text which is both reference and teacher... there are several well-evidenced chapters on the use of HBO to treat neruological disorders... the treatment of headache is well written up... This excellent edition should accordingly be accessed by the Defence Medical Library Service forthwith." Lt. Col. N. K. Cooper RAMC, Consultant in Occupational Medicine, Army Personnel Centre in Journal of the Royal Army Medical Corps, 2004" This is a comprehensive book on the medical modality of treating patients with higher than atmospheric pressure. This modality has progressed slowly as the infrastructure is highly complex and not commonly thought of by attending physicians. The author and contributors have presented a well written compendium of the physiology of, indications for, and successes of hyperbaric therapy. The foreword nicely summarizes the challenges faced by practitioners of hyperbaric therapy, which complements nicely the forewords of the previous editions. The purpose is to summarize the advances and to familiarize the medical community with the benefits of this therapy when used to mitigate the catastrophic consequences of some neurological disorders. The author and contributors have superbly summarized the field and presented many interesting ideas for future research. The book is primarily focused on specialty care providers, but it also has potential for bringing the relatively unknown subject to the attention of students and attendings. It also serves as a notable reference of the accepted literature on hyperbaric medicine. The majority of the book covers the history and physiology that is operative in hyperbaric medicine. This is followed by the clinical application of hyperbaric medicine with a particular emphasis on each of the different organ systems and in highly specialized areas such as transplantation. The chapters are succinct yet comprehensive. The imaging studies are presented well, the tables easy to understand, and the references well documented. This is a valuable book for every major medical library. Although its focus is on a specific group of tertiary care practitioners, it is a tremendous resource for practitioners and researchers.
