About the Author

Robert Hickling's main area of research is engineering acoustics with particular focus on application of sound-intensity measurement, motor vehicle and environmental noise, and noise and overpressure due to airbags. Born in Bologna, Italy, he received an MA (Pure and Applied Mathematics) in 1954 from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and a PhD in Engineering Science in 1963 from the California Institute of Technology. He has been an industry consultant for Delphi, Autoliv and Takata and is a fellow of the ASME and ASA. He was a Scientific Officer, for the Royal Naval Scientific Service, UK. He worked at the General Motors Research Laboratories, Michigan, USA. He held the post of Research Professor of Engineering Research at the University of Mississippi and is now a Professor Emeritus. He is the owner and president of Sonometrics Inc.
