Reviews

This early reader, most appropriate for children in kindergarten and first grade, introduces the reader to the central characteristics of autism. The text is easy to understand and includes pictures which illustrate the relevant concepts from the text, such as the communication skills, social skills, sensory needs, and special talents children with autism exhibit, as well as how friends can help. A list of additional resources is included, and these are appropriate for young readers with their parents' or teachers' support. Includes a glossary, a list of some related texts, and ways to access Internet sites related to the topic. This book would facilitate valuable classroom discussion about understanding children with special needs in inclusive settings. It is also one that would address topics such as individual development and identity, which relate to any early social studies lesson. Part of the "Understanding Differences" series.-- "Children's Literature Comprehensive Database"
