About the Author

Nellie Foster has spent her entire adult life in the medical field, from managing and creating medical labs to working as an educator in the field of infertility, to serving as the Director of Clinical Operations in a naturopathic college in Tempe, Arizona. When Cass approached her with the idea of a condensed Seder, she was immediately onboard. Cass Foster, Professor Emeritus of Theatre, continues to be actively involved in the theatre as an educator, director and playwright. Having written a series of Sixty-Minute Shakespeare plays, the standing joke at his long Passover Seders was "How about a Sixty-Minute Seder this year?" It occurred to Cass that others might appreciate a condensed version as well. Judith HaLevy has served as Rabbi of the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue since 1996. She holds advanced degrees in International Relations from both Rutgers University and Columbia University and was ordained in 1992. She has been a member of the executive committee of the Los Angeles Board of Rabbis since 2002 and was installed as president of the Board of Rabbis of Los Angeles in May 2011. She is known throughout the Los Angeles area as a gifted teacher and speaker.

Reviews

"Cass and Nellie Foster have done an amazing job of sifting the essence of the Passover ritual from the embellishments of time. Each section is explained clearly, with the appropriate blessings in Hebrew and transliteration. The symbols are explained in a manner accessible to Jews and non-Jews alike... Best of all, Nellie's family recipes make it possible for anyone to create a Splendid Seder Meal." -- Rabbi Judith HaLevy, Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue "A seder in an hour? To a traditional rabbi, it sounds like heresy! But you now hold an opportunity to discover a truth about this long-standing ritual that is often obscured by the focus on form over substance...Cass and Nellie Foster have distilled it to its essence. And I dare you not to be captivated by the opportunities they present." -- Rabbi Jack Moline, Agudas Achim Congregation, Alexandria, Virginia "We are indebted to Cass and Nellie Foster for taking the bold step of creating a revolutionary Haggadah that offers a path to creating a superb alternative to the traditional Haggadah by offering us choices and helping us with planning. For those who seek a modified Seder that will stimulate discussion, inspire interest and educate Jews with a range of backgrounds will find the Sixty-Minute Seder a perfect script for the Pesach drama." -- Rabbi Jerome M. Epstein, CEO/Executive Vice President Emeritus United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism "You have created a Sixty-Minute Seder for seniors! We love your book. It is great and written so warmly and clearly, it's perfect for our seniors here at the care facility." -- Cantor Leo Fettman and his wife, Annette Fettman. Cantor Fettman co-authored SHOAH: Journey from the Ashes with Paul M. Howey. "You have done a great job in highlighting the main points of the Haggadah and arranging them in an order that allows the Seder to flow and the story it tells to be easily absorbed...I hope the book is a success and helps many to have a meaningful Seder." -- - Rabbi Dr. Andrew Goldstein, President, Liberal Judaism, London, UK. (Reform) Creating such a Haggadah is no simple undertaking and you are to be congratulated for making the traditional Haggadah more accessible. -- - Rabbi Michael Boyden of Kehilat Yonatan located in Hod HaSharon, just north of Tel Aviv (Reform) I really liked your Haggadah. It is comprehensive...without letting out the important stuff. -- - Rabbi Corrie Zeidler, LJG Brabant in Tilburg, the Netherlands (Reform) Bravo for creating the Sixty Minute Seder. No need to tell you how much it is needed! (This)... is a wonderful resource that will enable people to create their own Passover Seder in a personal and meaningful way. The Sixty Minute Seder will bring the joy of a Passover Seder to those longing for the rich Jewish ritual but lacking experience...Includes singing traditional songs, and introducing new ones to popular melodies. I highly recommend it. -- - Rabbi Bonnie Cohen, Comunitat Jueva ATID de Catalunya, Spain (Reform) An incredibly accessible Haggadah full of song, explanation, transliteration, Hebrew, and all sorts of recipes, ideas and commentaries. Sure to inspire and aid in Seders for years to come! -- - Rabbi David Stein Temple Kehilat Nitzan, Victoria, Australia (Conservative) ...Many thanks for the opportunity to look through your masterwork! 'Dayenu' - yes, one CAN have enough, one can have much more than enough, and it is important to concentrate on the basics so that all present can experience, learn and enjoy the Seder. This is what the Sixty-Minute Seder sets out to do and it succeeds! -- Rabbi Dr. Walter Rothschild, Rabbi of 'Or Chadasch' Liberal Jewish Community, Vienna, Austria and State Rabbi of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. With Passover in just a couple of weeks, now may be the time to consider taking a new Haggadah out for a test drive. Perhaps this will be the year you'll have a 'Sixty-Minute Seder.' -- Rebecca Elson, The Magical Buffet This year's simple son is definitely the 'Sixty-Minute Seder,' a slim volume compiled by husband-and-wife team Cass and Nellie Foster. It is what it says it is: a very concise, easy-to-follow rendition of the Seder, geared to non-Hebrew speakers and non-experts. It accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish, and is perfect for those looking for a Seder that, unlike the one described in the liturgy, doesn't last until sunrise. -- Jay Michaelson, contributing editor, The Jewish Daily Forward
