About the Author

Shane Howard was born and raised by the Merri River in Dennington, near Warrnambool in South West Victoria. One of seven children, he was born into a musical family. His anthemic song, Solid Rock and the album, Spirit of Place (1982), with his band Goanna achieved substantial commercial success. He released two more Goanna albums, Oceania (1985), Spirit Returns (1998) and nine solo albums; Back to the Track (1988) River (1990) Time Will Tell (1993) Live in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand (1994) Clan (1996) Beyond Hope's Bridge (2001) Retrospect (2004) Another Country (2004) Songs Of Love And Resistance (2006) Driftwood (2009) on his Goanna Arts label. He has produced numerous albums for other artists, including Archie Roach, Jimmy Chi & The Pigram Brothers. His songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as Mary Black, John Farnham, Troy Cassar Daley & Seaman Dan. He is a recipient of an Australia Council Fellowship, PFFF Artist of the Year, 2005 and a patron of the Spirit of Eureka Committee. He is also a founding member of the Tarerer Festival and the internationally acclaimed Black Arm Band. Having travelled widely, he now lives with his wife and family, back in South West Victoria, in Killarney, Australia, just down the road from where his Irish Famine migrant great grandparents settled.
