For a musician who has spent the better half of his life either intoxicated or on a drug high, Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has produced a surprisingly detailed account of his life. Raised in the 1960s and '70s by a drug dealer father who first introduced his preteen son to drugs by mashing them into bananas, the high school delinquent and UCLA dropout seemed destined for a life of rabble-rousing until his high school band-cofounded by close friends Michael "Flea" Balzary and Hillel Slovak-took off and became one of the most popular groups of the 1990s. Though he peppers his book with little known facts (for instance, the author narrowly missed being named Clark Gable Kiedis), the punk-funk rocker dedicates too few pages to his introspective music-writing process and too many to his incessant drug use and revolving door of girlfriends (which included actress Ione Skye, singer Sin?ad O'Connor and director Sofia Coppola). But while Kiedis fails to scratch beneath the surface of his fast-lane life, his frankness is moving, especially toward the end of the book, when his mea culpa turns into a full-blown account of recovery and redemption. If you've ever had a family member or close friend struggle with drug addiction, this book will give you an amazing insight into their life and the terrible world of addiction.

Brilliantly written and I couldn't put it down.

I never considered myself to be a RHCP fan - I have always enjoyed a few of their songs but that is about the extent of it. Having said that this has to be the best book I have read. Ever. Anthony has a way of telling his story. It's not glorified it is not focused on the fame or name dropping. It is just simply the way his life has been and he does not make any pretences or apologise for who he is, he just explains how things were and that all they wanted to do was share their music with others. I found it to be a gripping read and have since found a new appreciation for the band now that I can understand the meaning of the lyrics and where the songs have come from. The band members have all had individual battles in life and from the read of it are all pretty lucky to be here. Epic inspirational story. Loved it

A great insight into the life of a true music genius. A book that is difficult to put down - Keidis is open and honest about his relationships, his drug abuse, his music, and overcoming drug addiction. Not a book I would sit down with for a fun, easy read - it takes you deep into the heart of the man, and not all of it is pretty.

An amazing book I just couldn't put down. You want to just keep reading it. You do not have to be a fan of the band at all to enjoy this book - it is a story about a person with an unusual job, unusual friends and an unusual upbringing before it is a story about the Red Hot Chili Peppers specifically, so there is really something there for everyone. A story anyone can enjoy, thoroughly entertaining and very, very compelling.

I am not an avid book reader but most definately an avid RHCP fan. I have read the book 3 times and can only say that it is fantastic that Anthony Keidis and his band members have survived the hardship that they went through as a band. Can only be explained by their enormous talent and the love of music and music writing. Highly reccommend it to anybody and everybody. AWESOME!!!

This book was a great read. It was very interesting to find out about his life and his struggle with drugs. Some of the stuff that he talks about is unbelievable and seems surreal. You don't have to be a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan to enjoy this book and I highly recommend it to anyone. he also talks about the band and how it came to be.
