About the Author

Stephen Haseler is Professor of Government at London Metropolitan University. He has a long record of political involvement having served on the GLC in the 1970s and helped to form the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1981. Among his numerous publications are The Gaitskellites (1969), The Tragedy of Labour (1981), and Superstate - The New Europe and its Challenge to America (2004) Henning Meyer is Managing Editor of "Social Europe. the journal of the european left" and currently researching the latest revision of social democracy in Britain and Germany. He has been actively involved in the German SPD and is Associate Director of the European Research Forum at London Metropolitan University.
