This book is a tremendous coming-of-age story. The book opens in 1958, the first third of the book describes an idyllic childhood where Rinny plays and learns with her affluent family. Suddenly, Rinny's parents divorce. The next six years spiral downward for Rinny as her father hardly notices her and her mother verbally and physically assaults her. She begins to try and control the only thing she can-her eating habits. A school counselor notices her pain and through several years of talking together, Rinny is able to put the pieces of her life back together. The book is written in very short chapters that illustrate particular incidents in Rinny's life; it makes for a quick and compelling read. Baskin has a unique voice.
