Stanislaw Turlej is an assistant professor in the Institute of History at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He is the author and editor of numerous published works, including the book The Chronicle of Monemvasia: The Migration of the Slavs and Church Conflicts in the Byzantine Source from the Beginning of the 9th Century (2001).
Stanislaw Turlej's work on Justinian I the Great's establishment of
a new Church province in the Balkans, with a seat in Justiniana
Prima (535), offers a novel perspective on the aim and the reasons
behind this foundation, which have been a topic of lively
international debate among historians, theologians, and
archaeologists. The book, based on an illuminating analysis of
numerous historical sources, ancient ecclesiastical law, and
archaeological data, explains the actual function of the foundation
in a completely new light. The publication of this book is a
significant achievement for international studies on the period
bridging antiquity and the Middle Ages.
