About the Author

Erin Hagar writes fiction and nonfiction for children and teens. Her manuscript There Was a War On (Charlesbridge Press, 2016) was awarded first prize in the picture book category in the Hunger Mountain Literary Journal's youth writing competition. She teaches for the Center for Talented Youth program at Johns Hopkins University and has worked helping educators design curricula and refine their teaching strategies. She lives in Baltimore with her husband and two children. She has not yet trussed a chicken on the style Julia Child's, but makes a mean molasses cookie. As a child Joanna Gorham traveled all over the world. She found a love for food, exploring, and storytelling. Now she tells her own stories through her watercolors for children's books and family magazines. She recently won two of Applied Arts Magazine's Young Blood Awards, for the brightest up-and-coming talents. You can find her painting in a little red cottage on an island in the Pacific Northwest.

Reviews

"Children will love reading this story" --Epicurus Magazine "Full of Julia's trademark gusto, this book serves up an excellent introduction to the life of this famed chef."--School Library Journal School Library Journal "Gr 3-6-This fascinating work covers the life of chef, author, and TV personality Julia Child. Readers are introduced to young Julia, an engaging girl with a healthy appetite and a zest for life. After boarding school, she followed in her mother's footsteps, attending Smith College in Massachusetts. Julia had fun at Smith while giving little thought to her future. In the 1930s, most women either didn't have careers at all or chose from very limited, acceptable options, but "Julia didn't want to be a nurse or a secretary-she didn't know what she wanted to be." Deemed too tall at 6'2" to join the navy, Julia later worked at the Office of War Information and held other government jobs around the world. While in Ceylon, Julia met Paul Child, a painter, photographer, and gourmand. They married, and Paul's job took the couple to Paris. There, Julia ate the "most exciting meal of my life" and became determined to learn all she could about French cooking. By then in her late thirties, she enrolled in the renowned cooking school Le Cordon Bleu and found her passion. She spent her remaining years testing recipes, writing cookbooks and memoirs, and producing her famous television show on public broadcasting. The full-page color, realistic illustrations interspersed throughout bring the text to life. The writing is lively and intriguing, much like the subject, and will appeal to a wide audience. Julia's is an inspiring story, reminding readers that it's never too late to learn and that success often follows a circuitous path. VERDICT Full of Julia's trademark gusto, this book serves up an excellent introduction to the life of this famed chef."--Sara-Jo Lupo Sites, George F. Johnson Memorial Library, Endicott, NY (c) Copyright 2015 "Hagar's engaging words pepper this biography with Gorham's charming illustrations" --The Baltimore Sun "This delightful biography has all the earmarks of a Julia Child recipe -- a fresh, new approach, delicious ingredients, and exceptional taste. Her engaging story will entice a cadre of future Julias to follow in her footsteps." --Bob Spitz, author of Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child Julia Child's beautiful spirit comes to life in the vibrant text and gorgeous illustrations of this charming book. Warm, fun, and engaging, it is as delightful as the French Chef herself. --James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Rodale's Organic Life and author of Cradle of Flavor "As full of rich sensations as any Julia Child recipe" -- Elizabeth Partridge, National Book Award Finalist and author of Marching to Freedom: Walk Together, Children, and Don't You Grow Weary. "In vivid, sparkling prose, Erin Hagar presents the remarkable Julia Child first as an imaginative and headstrong child, then a fascinating young woman, and finally the successful master chef she became. The more I learned, the more I admired her. You will too!" -- Leda Schubert, winner of the 2013 Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children "I love this book!" --Jo Hick, Youth Services Librarian, Phillips Public Library
