About the Author

Patricia Hipwell M.Ed., B.Sc. Econ. (Hons), Grad. Dip. of Literacy Ed., P.G.C.E. is an independent literacy consultant for her own company, logonliteracy. She delivers literacy professional development to teachers in Australia, and works predominantly in Queensland schools. Patricia has specialised in assisting all teachers to be literacy teachers, especially high school subject specialists who often struggle with what it means to be a content area teacher and a literacy teacher. Assessment has been an area of interest for many years and much of Patricia's work enables teachers to create assessment that is 'do-able'. This is important because students often have very little idea of what they are required to do and rely heavily on parents/caregivers to assist them. Lyn Carter [PhD MEd (Research) BEc DipEd] is a specialist in the area of NAPLAN testing, having made it the focus of both her Masters and Doctoral research. Lyn spent fifteen years teaching mathematics to students from primary to Year 12. She was a member of the committee that drafted the current Queensland Mathematics B and C syllabuses and for many years was a Mathematics B panellist. Before entering the teaching profession, Lyn worked in the field of statistical analysis. 2016 is Lyn's sixth year as an educational consultant and trainer for Count on Numeracy. She runs workshops for teachers of secondary mathematics and numeracy. She also works in these areas and on whole school numeracy and NAPLAN preparation with schools across Queensland. Lyn is an accredited Master Trainer in the use of Autograph - dynamic mathematics software and is also expert in the use of Microsoft Excel as a tool to support the teaching of mathematics. She has teamed with Pat Hipwell on many occasions to run workshops on cross-curricular topics. In addition to her work with practicing teachers, Lyn works with the YuMi Deadly Centre of the Queensland University of Technology, providing professional development for mathematics teachers, developing pedagogical resources and undertaking research into the teaching of mathematics. She has published scholarly papers in recognised research and professional journals and presented at many conferences in Australia and overseas. Teaming with Pat Hipwell, Lyn has co-authored several books in the areas of mathematics and numeracy. Malcolm Carter [BA (Hons) PGCE DipM] is a former Principal and Head of Curriculum. He is an experienced teacher of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, junior science, mathematics and PE, and has co-authored a Chemistry textbook. He has particular expertise in gifted and talented education, having developed and taught Dynamic Thinking - an elective course for students in Years 8 and 9. Since retiring in 2015, Malcolm has joined the Count on Numeracy team to assist in the implementation of the Australian Curriculum, teaching science (including to out-of field teachers and in the primary years), gifted and talented education and the differentiation of science curricula. He has developed units of work for Cricket Australia to support the Australian Curriculum in mathematics and science. Having many years in school leadership positions, Malcolm can also assist in school management, timetabling and organisation.
