Reviews

"John Wentworth, New Hampshire's last royal governor, was a real American. With an eye constantly out for the main chance, he sought ways to benefit both his province and himself. While calling for the reform of the imperial system, he took maximum advantage of its patronage networks. But, as Paul W. Wilderson capably establishes, Wentworth's was a tragic tale. Squeezed between the passions of his British lords and his fellow Americans, Wentworth worked to craft a rational series of compromises, never understanding that politics can be more than just making deals. "... Wilderson's work fills a major gap in the literature of the American Revolution, going a long way toward explaining how it was possible for intelligent Americans to pick the British side. As Wilderson concludes, Wentworth could not separate his identity as an American from his loyalty to Britain - a dilemma deserving of our respect." - The Journal of American History; "This twenty-year study by Wilderson has resulted in a masterfully crafted treatise of a complex man in a complex situation at a revolutionary time... The documentation is superb and is accompanied by a sweeping bibliography. The active text involves the reader... a meaningful addition to our literature on the American Revolution." - The New England Quarterly"
