Richard Platt is a well-known children's author. He has written some 70 books (including all the titles in Red Kite Books' Discovering series) and has won several prizes, including a Blue Peter award and a silver SMARTIES.
Gr 4-6-Similar in format to Philip Steele's Pirates (1997) and Barnaby Harward's The Best Book of Pirates (2002, both Kingfisher), this book is highly visual, with information conveyed in clear, although not detailed, prose. Expressive, cartoon illustrations with inset text will invite readers to peruse spreads devoted to matters such as "Pirate Weapons" and "Treasure Island." While cursory in their examination of this cultural phenomenon, these chapters do give a nice historical overview of and context to the time periods in which pirates flourished. Although there is an index, this book will probably function better as a browsing item.
