Twenty-five years after first reading this book I can still recite most of the rhyming couplets that make up this addictive story. A lonely store-bound dog, Duke is rescued by Sammy Brown but just can't fit in with the neighbourhood dogs as he has never learned to dig. Not wanting to let Sammy down, Duke decides to give it one more try... However, when he finds he can dig, Duke's over-enthusiasm leads him to dig up the whole town. A beautiful and hilarious story that explores concepts of friendship, loyalty and making amends.

I absolutely adored this book as a child, and still love it even to this day. It's a simply beautiful ryhming story about a poor sad old dog who gets adopted by Sammy Brown. But the poor old dog had never learned to dig tied up on the hard stone floor, so Sammy and his new dog friends show him how. He soon gets the hang of it, however he is so enthusiastic that he goes about and digs up the whole town.
It has amazing pictures and a simple, yet lovely story that everyone will enjoy. I highly recommend.
