Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957)was a major poet and essayist, renowned educator, and a diplomat and cultural minister who emerged from humble rural origins of peasant stock in Chile to become an international figure. She received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1945, the first Latin American author to receive this distinction, and she was recognised and respected throughout Europe and the Americas for her commitment to the defence of human rights and for her dedication to the cause of peace and social justice. Michael P. Predmore is professor of modern peninsular Spanish literature at Stanford University, USA. He is a prominent scholar in the field of modern Hispanic poetry and is recognised internationally for his studies, editions, and translations of the poetry of Antonio Machado and Juan Ramon Jimenez. His scholarly publications include important articles on Ruben Dario and Pablo Neruda. Liliana Baltra is a professor emerita of the University of Chile in the field of applied linguistics. She has published extensively in Chile, both in English and Spanish, pertaining to the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, and also in the United States and the UK in specialised magazines in this same field.
