Reviews

Gr 7 Up-The Civil War is often described as blue versus gray. Early in the war, however, some Union troops wore butternut and some Confederates wore blue. Confusion ensued, and soldiers were killed by "friendly fire." One can imagine the importance of the standardization of uniforms to the soldier in the field. Civil War Minutes, a four-volume set of 39 vignettes discusses this and other aspects of the day-to-day life of the Civil War soldier. Michael Kraus, Civil War reenactor and Military Coordinator for the film Gettysburg, stars. His expertise is obvious, but a professional actor might have better served the series as his delivery lacks authority. Daily life, uniforms, weapons, leisure activities, correspondence, and camp life are discussed. David Kincaid and Greg Singer perform authentic Civil War songs. Weapons and their impact on the course of the war are covered. Letters to and from soldiers and in camp newspapers are some of the primary source documents cited. There is little mention of women other than as sweethearts, and not much of a multicultural view. Pictures are used to help illustrate the film. Additionally, some silent film clips similar to those in Birth of a Nation are used. The presentation seems skewed to the Union viewpoint and, at one point, Kraus speaks of "The War of the Rebellion" which is an offensive term to some. The five- to eight-minute episodes are eminently suited for classroom use. The detailing of the soldier's life will also appeal to Civil War buffs.-Mike Brown, Greenbelt Middle School, MD Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
