About the Author

Welleran Poltarnees (1932-2016) was the pen name of Harold Ray Darling. Author, founder of numerous bookstores and publishing companies, book collector, and image collector nonpareil, Darling made books for more than forty years. It was his life’s work to share his large library of vintage children’s books and paper ephemera with the world. He also had a lifelong love of gardens; his first memory is falling out of his baby carriage and landing on a bed of odorous white flowers. He used a book called Great Gardens of the World as a guide whenever he traveled. His favorite time for gardens was night. His favorite garden music was Manuel De Falla's "Nights in the Gardens of Spain", and his favorite garden poem was "The Garden" by Andrew Marvell. Darling lived in both San Diego and Seattle.
