Mia Snow is a top cop with the Alien Investigation and Removal unit. She runs around dealing with illegal immigrants from a long way away, and extreme violence is good when it is necessary.
A partner is critically injured and she ends up in a relationship of sorts with an alien that reveals something about who she actually is, and why she can do what she can do better than other humans.

Warning: this book is written in first person, but it is a good enough read that even those who can’t stand reading an ‘I’ book should enjoy this one.
The setting is a somewhat futuristic Earth that has a number of resident otherworld aliens, legal and otherwise. Mia Snow is an alien huntress for A.I.R.: the Alien Investigation and Removal agency. Her job is to hunt down the worst of the alien criminals and ‘remove’ them, a euphemism for ‘bang, bang, and you’re dead’. She has a reason for being so enthusiastic: Aliens killed her brother when she was a child. When her partner, Dallas, is left fighting for his life while he and Mia are investigating a case, Mia starts hunting for the serial kidnapper and murderer—Kyrin en Arr, an Arcadian. To her astonishment, she—the hater of all tings alien—is appallingly attracted to the suspect. At the same time her not-so-latent psychic abilities burst into full flower, something she has to hide from her A.I.R associates. Mia is walking a knife’s edge, risking her heart, her badge, her life, but the most shattering denouement is yet to come.
If you like J. D. Robb’s Eve Dallas character in the ‘In Death’ series, you’ll like Mia Snow. There are strong similarities throughout the story: the dedicated cop with an unhappy childhood, the rich and handsome and possibly criminal love interest, the futuristic setting seamlessly interwoven with contemporary characters and dialogue. Personally I like Robb better, but ‘Awaken Me Darkly’ is still a fascinating read.
