Wanda Poltawska became a doctor after World War II and went on to study psychiatry and specialise in the treatment of juvenile patients, including the deeply-traumatised "Auschwitz children". She worked in the psychiatric clinic of Krakow's Medical Academy and at Jagiellonian University in Poland. She was also a close friend and advisor to Pope John Paul II, serving on the Papal Commission on Family Matters. Married with four daughters, Poltawska resides in her native Poland.
