Gary Waite grew up in Toronto, Ontario, with his mother and
brother, Brian. After studying theology in Toronto, he moved to
Waterloo, Ontario, where he finished B.A. and M.A. degrees in
history at the University of Waterloo.
His PhD, completed under the supervision of Werner O. Packull
(Conrad Grebel College), was a groundbreaking study of the
Anabaptist career of David Joris. After receiving the University of
Waterloo Alumni Gold Medal, the dissertation was revised and
published as David Joris and Dutch Anabaptism, 1524-1543.
