Performer Notes
  • Despite writing thousands of columns, appearing in dozens of films, and working constantly as a radio commentator, Will Rogers was not recorded often, and the live monologue included in this compilation apparently represents a good portion of his audio legacy. (Given the references he makes and his 1935 death, it must date from the early '30s.) Rogers' wit, irreverence, and sly commentary on everything from Congress to culture are preserved and very enjoyable here, despite some audio limitations. Most of the time he's sharing his observations with a very appreciative audience, and although his folksy drawl can seem like a put-on to mask his criticism, he's pretty funny and a deft singer while skewering the crooner Bing Crosby. ~ John Bush
